NORTHLAND -BRYNDERWYN HILLS
SUPER WEEKEND CLOSURES
Resurfacing works will see State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills fully
close for two 4-day ‘super weekends’ next month, ensuring the route is in peak
condition ahead of the busy summer season.
It’s the final stage of the SH1 Brynderwyn Hills recovery project, and involves
applying a full-width asphalt surface, reinstating lane markings and passing
lanes, and returning the route to 80km/h, making journeys to and from
Northland smoother.
The route will be fully closed from 13 – 16 November and again from
20 - 23 November. In between the closures, the road will reopen for 3
days (17 November – 19 November).
“NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) appreciates that SH1 Brynderwyn
Hills is a crucial connection for Northland.
While there’s no perfect time for a
closure, the selected dates and approach has been carefully considered to
balance the impact on the community while ensuring we can do an efficient and
quality job,” says Steve Matene, NZTA’s System Manager in Northland.
While SH1 over the Brynderwyn Hills will be closed during the super
weekends, Northland will remain accessible via three scenic alternative routes.
See map attached .
Cove Road detour
– light vehicles
(trucks with trailers not permitted
Mangawhai to Waipū)
Paparoa Oakleigh Road detour
– trucks and trucks with trailers up to
50MAX can use this route
SH12 / SH14 detour
– Over
dimensional Heavy vehicles, High
Productivity
Motor
Vehicles
(HPMV) should use this route.
The closure will extend from SH1/
SH12 intersection on the south side
of the Brynderwyn Hills through to
the bottom of the hill on the north
side (adjacent to Waipu Gorge Road).
Clear signage will direct vehicles
along the detour routes.
An alternative for SH1 Brynderwyn
Hills is part of the Northland
Corridor Te Hana to Port Marsden
Highway
Road
of
National
Significance (RoNS).
SH1
Brynderwyn
Hills
suffered
significant damage
from severe
weather events in early 2023, resulting in
severe under slips and over slips.
The final resurfacing works were planned
for last year but deferred 12 months

engagement
with
key
Northland leaders and stakeholders.

BREAST CANCER FUNDRAISING
Paparoa Lions Club held their inaugural Bling A Bra Breast
Cancer fundraising event in October. They invited the
community to decorate and enter a bra to be hung on
display boards in an exhibition at the Paparoa Hall which
was then open to the public to view from Friday until
Sunday. Entered Bras were decorated with a wide range of
items including feathers, beads, buttons, Steam Punk items,
fabric and shells.
The public who came to view were invited to vote for their
favourite bra by putting money in the corresponding jar, the
bras that raised the most money in votes were the winners.
There were 46 bras entered, 7 in the Youth category and 39
in the Adult category. The winning entries were Youth –
Wedding Faces 1st, Peacock 2nd and Adults – Mosaic 1st
and Butterfly 2nd.
This weekend of fundraising was then finished off with a
High Tea at the Hall. All 84 tickets were sold, and the Hall
was dressed up in a sea of pink tablecloths, pink chair
bows, fine China, balloons and banners. Most of the
attendees got into the spirit of the event and dressed up in
their finest pink to enjoy an afternoon of fine food, lots of
chatter,
lovely
background music and
great raffles and door

all events a grand total
of just over $4,300 was

WEATHER
September
The Spring bulbs are all doing their
best to out shine each other. The ducks
have been producing lots of fluffy little
ducklings.
The persistent winds and showers are
continuing and the lawns are growing
fast. The deciduous trees are bursting
into leaf.
The rainfall at our place for September
was 105ml over 17 days. The highest
amount of rain recorded at our place
for September was in 2015 with
207ml. The least recorded at our place
for a September, was in 2008 with
43.5ml.
Derek recorded in the Hakaru valley,
112ml over 20 days. I noticed the
Brynderwyn waterfall is flowing
nicely. Enjoy the rest of your Spring.
Cheers, Karen.

KAIWAKA COMMUNITY GARDENS
Check out the Kaiwaka Community Gardens behind the Kaiwaka War Memorial
Hall and across from Pukekos. Locals are currently tending to the garden beds.
More volunteers to attend to the constant weeding and trimming of grass are
always welcomed.
See Facebook for more information: Kaiwaka Gardeners.
ONERIRI PLANTS
Wildflowers growing in the gravel beside the driveway.
Honeywort Nigella and alyssum. These are annuals and do
not transplant well. They are best sown in situ.
When they have done their thing and set seed I collect some,
storing the seed in brown paper bags. This allows them to dry
properly. The rest I scatter throughout the garden. Which is how these came to
be here.
Late October and Irises are flowering beautifully at the moment. They seem to
do very well here in the Kaipara. I'm slowly spreading them throughout the
garden. They generally require well drained sunny positions. Apart from
Japanese and Siberican iris which prefer damp.
I'm bad at feeding but they will profit from the occasional handful of seaweed
fertiliser. When it comes to fertiliser I'm a great composter. Compost, worm
farms and seaweed is all we use. Oh I forgot. Chicken poo and sheep poo from
the chickens and sheep. We try to keep everything in house.
NATIONAL GARDENING WEEK
As stated last month Yates are offering some lucky people entering their
competition some wonderful prizes.
The physical and mental health benefits from spending time in the garden have
been long proven. And, good news, you don’t need a quarter acre section to reap
those benefits! Creating a productive garden in a small space is absolutely
possible; whether it’s pots on the balcony or tubs in the courtyard.
With that in mind, we selected the prizes in our National Gardening Week Photo
Competition to squeeze the maximum amount of joy, from the smallest of
spaces. Winners were picked mid October but not provided.

AMY WEBER
We are very excited because for the
first time that I am aware of, we have
had a student, Amy Weber, accepted
for the two week long Science and
Technology forum, which will be
held
mid-January.
This
fully
residential programme is conducted by
Rotary
and
the
three
tertiary
institutions in Auckland. By the end of
the forum, 168 attendees from
throughout New Zealand, should have
a better understanding of the tertiary
courses they wish to follow and a
fuller appreciation of the place of
science and technology in business and
the wider community. It also provides
an opportunity for students to spend
time with like-minded people and the
experiences gained invariably results
in overall personal growth and a
renewed motivation to succeed. We
are certainly looking forward to Amy’s
report back early next year.
As has been mentioned previously our
Rotary club looks after Nikau Grove,
in Whaka Street and we support DOC
in taking care of Piroa Falls on Gorge
Road. Nikau Grove is a little gem
within our community and we ask you
to enjoy it and if you notice anything
untoward, please let a Rotarian know
so we can address the matter.
We are grateful for the Mentors for
our Driving Scheme, which we have
been offering for the past five years.
We would like to thank Patricia Hunt,
who has been with us from the start,
for her efforts in upskilling people
wanting to get their Restricted licence.
Your efforts have been very much
appreciated Patricia and we wish you
all the best for your future endeavours.
As the school year draws to a close, so
too do lessons and licenses. However,
we now have another Mentor on board
which will mean that there will be four
of us to teach those going for their
Restricted licence in the 2026. Just a
reminder, the service is not only for
school students. Eileen

VISIT TO SNOWPLANET
On the 17th of October the Sport
Leadership
class
visited
Snowplanet as an engaging
‘outdoor’ activity. For many,
balance and stamina were at
times obsolete but laughs and
curiosity were endless.
This experience at Snowplanet
provided myself and my peers
with the opportunity to challenge ourselves physically and for me, mentally.
During our one hour guidance session with the instructors, we were given
insights on balance, coordination and specific positions to stabilize ourselves if
we were daring enough to go down the slopes; and we all did! Throughout the
day, it was evident that everyone was both super excited to celebrate others'
progress as well as determined to try new things such as going down a slope or
even standing up confidently. There were numerous highlights from this
experience which predominantly vary from watching the majority of my
classmates attempt the biggest slope, Layla and Dion effortlessly landing a jump
from the big slope and also Harrison attempting a jump but the snow having
other plans. Overall, this experience was connection enhancing and I would
definitely recommend it to others. Wairua Nathan

HISTORICAL CORNER
We thought that this month we might look at the meaning
of the name of our town .
There are a few different theories about where the name
Kaiwaka came from so we thought we’d explore these.
First, if we look at the literal translation, Kaiwaka means
‘food’ or ‘to eat’ and ‘canoe’. Some people believe that the
name alludes to the fact that it was where wakas brought
food to be distributed.
Another idea is that a fire burned a fleet of waka.
Then there are stories that Kaiwaka are threatening cloud
formations that predict misfortune.
Local tradition also mentions a cloud formation that is only
observed in this part of the Kaipara. It is seen as an omen
that a high ranking person is about to pass on.
So we can probably choose which meaning we feel happiest
going with as all have a sense of truth within them.
Kaiwaka was the site of the final and most fierce battle of
the Musket Wars in 1825 which provides another theory on
the origins of our town’s name.
Hongi Hika exacted his revenge on the Ngāti Whātua, who
had slain almost 1000 Ngapuhi including Hongi Hika’s two
brothers. He ambushed the Ngāti Whātua by the Kaiwaka
River when Ngāpuhi, despite the loss of their canoes, which
had been set on fire by the enemy, won decisively at the
battle known as Te Ika-ā-Ranganui, at the junction of the
Kaiwaka River and the Waimake Stream. ~ Elizabeth

PLAY TAG in KAIWAKA
From Mel: ‘We started this module in response to Tomarata Tag giving up the NZTFI (New Zealand Tag Football Inc)
affiliation which left our Junior Tag Nationals players from the region with no affiliated module to play in to qualify for
NZTFI events.
NZTFI were looking to Warkworth for someone to run the module which is too far for our locals from up here.
Jody and Harmon Walker already had the local contacts and experience with the facility (KSA). Their neighbour River
Kerehoma has lots of experience coaching, playing and reffing Tag and had wanted to do something local for a while but
didn't know how to get it off the ground. Jody and I have the admin and organising experience for sport. Jody from
CKW Rugby in Kaiwaka and me from helping at Tomarata Tag for the past 8 or so years and president of Wellsford
Netball club.
Together the four of us all had what it took to get it off the ground and
couldn't have done it without each of our input into it.
We have had amazing community support for the module, with just over half
of the 120 or so players never playing tag before. We have 13 teams playing
in 3 grades of 4 teams each. There
are a couple of teams from the Kura
supported by Kamira Nahona that
have really helped boost numbers.
Pam and Mark Ottaway of course
have also been amazing with help
by opening the chip shop and
marking and painting lines etc.
We now have 4 Kaiwaka based
teams heading to the NZTFI run
Junior Tag Nationals in Takanini in
December under the Northern
Stingrays banner.

OTAMATEA Hawks rugby:
From the HAWKS: Pete Hargreaves - A Lifetime with
the Hawks
Few people have given more to the Otamatea Hawks than
Pete Hargreaves. From his early days when supporting his
father Russell Hargreaves with the Oneroa team, then on the
Eastern committee to helping shape the Hawks after the
amalgamation with Maungatūroto, Pete has been a constant
presence in the club for decades.
“When Otamatea was formed, I became the Premier team
manager and a committee member - a role I still hold today,”
he says. “I managed for more than 10 years, was a club
delegate to the Rodney Sub Union until about five years ago,
and represented Otamatea as a Sub Union delegate to Northland Rugby for
nearly 30 years.”
That level of service had not gone unnoticed - Pete is also a Life Member of the
Otamatea Hawks Rugby Club, a recognition he describes as both “a privilege
and humbling.”
“It’s nice to know what you’ve contributed over time is appreciated by others,”
he says.
Over the years, Pete has seen his fair share of success with the Hawks. “Winning
the championship three years in a row was something special,” he says with
pride. “We also won the interzone playoff twice and took out the Black Heart
Rum competition, where every club had a shot in a knockout format. We had to
win about five games to take the final - that one really stood out.”
But for Pete, it’s not just the trophies that define success. “Seeing so many
players go on to represent Northland, and watching Simon Parker come through
the IMB grades and become an All Black - that’s just as special.”
After decades of service, Pete’s pride in the club remains as strong as ever. “I’d
tell anyone thinking about getting involved - whether as a player or a volunteer -
that the club has a great culture,” he says. “Well coached, well managed, and run
by a strong committee that makes you and your family feel welcome.”
His commitment, loyalty, and love for the game continue to set an example for
the generations that follow.

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
DARGAVILLE BOOK SWAP
Now is a good time to come in and look through the
Dargaville books and DVDs that we're holding on our
shelves, before they go back.
The next book swap is happening on Thursday 6
November. We will be packing up the Dargaville books
currently on our shelves the week beforehand, and the new
books will be shelved on Friday 7 November.
The library will be open for its normal hours while this is
all going on.
ILLNESSES
If you are ill with something that is contagious, please do
not come into the library and spread your germs around.
This includes colds, flu, measles, chicken pox, tummy bugs,
shingles, and of course Covid - anything you can pass on to
another person. And it includes your children or
grandchildren who are home from school because they are
unwell, please.
If you want/need books and can't come in, we can help get
some to you. Contact the library, or me directly (email or
call/text 0274806275), and we can talk about selecting what
you want to read, and how we're
going to get it to you - whether
someone else comes and picks it
up or we deliver.
BOOK REVIEW
Recently I've read Dark Sky by
Marie
Connolly.
"Criminal
psychologist Nellie Prayle loves
solving murders. The more
complicated, the better. But when
a professor of astronomy is found
dead at Tekapo’s Mt John
Observatory
during
its
internationally-attended
50th
anniversary
conference
celebrations and Detective Jack
Simmons calls on Nellie to help
with the police investigation, she
soon realises that this is not your typical murder – and nor
are these your usual suspects." I loved the setting - it's
somewhere I'd like to visit myself - and enjoyed the tale. I
hope there will be more from this author in future.
